Dr Cathy Pearce (Senior Lecturer in Naval, Maritime and Coastal History at the University of Portsmouth) will lead this free walk. Numbers are limited, so please email us to book your place. Meet at the cormorant sculpture on the Riverside path by West Quay Fisheries.
The trail is an accessible route along the West Quay, which you can choose to walk through to the beach afterwards and/or visit the newly refurbished Newhaven Fort or Nature Reserve beyond.
A map is available to download. You can also explore the accompanying research for the map, which will provide lots of additional information to support the walk.

The rich history of Newhaven was researched as part of Sussex Community Development Association’s Newhaven Heritage Walking Routes.
Developed by local historian Dr Jenny Flood, and a team of local community members, three trails explore the fascinating stories and landmarks that have shaped the vibrant history of Newhaven.
The trail maps were illustrated by local illustrator and photographer Alex Lake, and are designed to be accessible to walkers of all ages and abilities, with options for self-guided exploration or groups walks (see our Instagram page @newhavenheritage). Whether you’re a long-time resident or first time visitor, our three heritage walking routes promise an enjoyable journey through local history.
