Heritage Walks

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, these walking routes unveil the hidden gems and untold tales, nestled in the streets of Newhaven. From its maritime history to its pivotal role in local industry, each route provides a glimpse into the past. Participants will have the chance to stroll through local neighbourhoods, visit landmark buildings and uncover anecdotes that bring the history of Newhaven to life.

  • 11.00am Saturday 27th December 2025 (approx 2.5 hours)

    Start: The Hope Inn, West Pier, Newhaven BN9 9DN.

    Join us for a stroll around Newhaven’s West Pier. We will share stories of war, weather and accidents centred around a port with aspirations to be the ‘Liverpool of the South’.

  • 11.00am Saturday 29th November 2025 (approx 2.5 hours)

    Start: Seaford Club House, Marine Parade, BN25 2QR.

    An exploration of sea tales, Tide Mills, sea plane stations and oyster ponds: from Seaford Sailing club to Newhaven Marine Workshops (Mamoosh).

    A linear walk. Meet at the Seaford Club House on Marine Parade and follow the coastal walk around Seaford Bay, past Tide Mills and the Seaplane Station, before moving slightly inland along the England Coastal Path into Newhaven, finishing up by the river at Marine Workshops and the Mamoosh Café.

    This is a chance to wander through the streets of Newhaven’s East Side and discover the stories that permeated a once thriving dockside community.

    Start: outside Mamoosh, Riverside, Marine Workshops, Newhaven.

  • 11.00am Saturday 30th August 2025 (approx 2 hours)

    Chris will lead this free walk.

    A chance to explore the rich retail past of Newhaven’s High street and its surroundings, with tales of dodgy deals and disappearing Lords. We also venture beyond the High Street to visit the Hillcrest Centre and the Workhouse and consider the vital role these institutions played in Newhaven’s rich history.

    Start: Memorial Green (end of Bridge Street).

    Please note: there will be some hill walking involved on this walk.

    Dr Cathy Pearce (Senior Lecturer in Naval, Maritime and Coastal History at the University of Portsmouth) will lead this free walk. Numbers are limited, so please email us to book your place. Meet at the cormorant sculpture on the Riverside path by West Quay Fisheries.

    The trail is an accessible route along the West Quay, which you can choose to walk through to the beach afterwards and/or visit the newly refurbished Newhaven Fort or Nature Reserve beyond.

    This trail is an accessible route along the West Quay, you can then choose to walk through to the beach and/or visit Newhaven Fort and Nature Reserve.
